The reported murder of police officers including a Division Police Officer (DPO) and another DPO battling for life with serious injuries in an encounter with kidnappers attests to the collapse of the security apparatus in Delta state.
Insecurity in Delta especially kidnapping and wanton killings have peaked in recent times to the extent that the DPO of Agbarho Division in Ughelli North LGA is shot dead on the spot and that of Orerokpe in Okpe LGA is seriously wounded with shots to the neck among other officers injured when they responded to a kidnap distress call.
This is not the first time police are being killed in the line of duty by higher fire power of criminal gangs. Twice, police rescue teams sent to the bushes of Ohoror and Agadama of Uwherun Clan in Ughelli North LGA were murdered by suspected herdsmen.
Till date the police by censored reports have not been able to give a clear figure of how many of its men were murdered in those two encounters under CP Abaniwonda Surajudeen Olufemi early in the year. But some sources alleged that over 20 personnel may have been murdered in those encounters.
Now we are faced with the brutal murder of a DPO and some of his men in Agbarho in Ughelli North LGA. The Insecurity along the East West Road between Agbarho through Ughelli down to Uwherun has been a cause for alarm for which we have been advocating proactive security measures to check the growing incidents.
This is the height of criminality in Delta state. If police officers are not safe, then the entire Delta State has become unsafe for every person.
